Visit Ohlange
The Ohlange Institute, was founded in 1900 by Dr. John Langalibalele Dube, the first president of the African National Congress (ANC). As South Africa’s first school founded by a Black South African, Ohlange holds a significant place in the nation’s history. The institute was established to empower and educate young Africans, promoting self-reliance and leadership. Today, it remains an iconic heritage site on the Inanda Heritage Route, where visitors can explore its rich legacy and even visit the spot where Nelson Mandela cast his vote in South Africa’s first democratic election in 1994, symbolizing a profound moment of freedom and equality for the nation. The site has also recently been declared a world heritage site.
