Established in 1904 by Mahatma Gandhi, this iconic site embodies the power of peaceful resistance and is an essential stop on the Inanda Heritage Route.
The Phoenix Settlement is the birthplace of Gandhi’s revolutionary philosophy of Satyagraha (truth and nonviolence), a principle that inspired movements for social justice around the globe. During his time here, Gandhi fostered a community built on self-reliance and equality, and he printed The Indian Opinion, a newspaper that advocated for civil rights and justice for marginalised communities.
