Teachers, Take Your Students on an Unforgettable Journey
February is always a special month for the Inanda Heritage Route. It’s a time when we come together to honor two of South Africa’s greatest leaders, Dr. John Langalibalele Dube and Dr. Nelson Mandela. These remarkable men are both celebrated on February 11th, a date that marks Dr. J.L. Dube’s birth and passing, as well as the historic release of Dr. Nelson Mandela from prison in 1990.
This year, we kept the tradition alive by inviting local schools like Comprehensive High School and Machobeni High School to join us in reflecting on the legacy of these freedom fighters. Seeing young minds listen attentively to tour guides as they walked through the grounds at Ohlange Institute was truly inspiring. It’s moments like these that remind us of the power of storytelling and how important it is to pass on the legacy of our nation’s heroes to the next generation.

Students Must Experience Tourism Firsthand
It’s always an incredible experience to celebrate with learners from different schools, but the reality is that we cannot invite everyone at once. That’s why we encourage schools to plan their own excursions to the Inanda Heritage Route, and it can be anytime throughout the year; it doesn’t have to be in February. It’s an opportunity to let young people connect with their history and understand how far we’ve come as a nation. Knowing where we come from helps them make better decisions about their future, because a country that understands its past is better prepared for its future. We especially encourage schools offering Tourism as a subject to take advantage of this unique learning experience.
The Inanda Heritage Route goes beyond textbooks, giving students a practical understanding of what tourism really means. They get to see tourism in action at a community level, interact with local guides, and learn about the business side of tourism … whether they dream of being entrepreneurs or working in the sector one day. Real-world exposure like this ignites a passion for the industry and helps students see tourism as a viable and exciting career path.
Students Will Discover History, Culture, and Entrepreneurship
The Inanda Heritage Route truly has something for everyone. Apart from the Ohlange Institute, learners can visit other heritage sites like the Phoenix Settlement, established by Mahatma Gandhi in 1904, and the Inanda Seminary, the oldest girls' school on the continent, founded by American missionaries in 1869. They can also explore the Shembe Church and learn about African spirituality. And it doesn’t end with history ... the route also offers vibrant cultural experiences, from community interactions to enjoying traditional Zulu cuisine or a popular township Shisanyama lunch. There’s also a chance to visit local crafters and other tourism businesses, giving students insight into community-based tourism and local entrepreneurship.
If you’re a teacher looking to give your learners an unforgettable educational experience, the Inanda Heritage Route is the perfect route or destination. Whether it’s for history, culture, or tourism education, this route brings learning to life and leaves a lasting impact on young minds.
